A Titans win streak

(My Sportsbook) - There's a mildly amusing sequence in a little film I like to call "Major League II."

The team is bad again after one trip to the playoffs. The Cleveland Indians were really playing poorly, but they managed to win back-to-back games. Their fearless leader, the great Lou Brown, told them after if they could manage to win one more in a row, that would be a "winning streak."

Now, I don't want to eschew the logic of Skip Lou, nor do I mean to show disrespect to the upcoming Jacksonville Jaguars, but I'm going to call the Titans' two wins in a row a winning streak. They are calling it as much, considering it's the first time Tennessee has won back-to-back games since the end of the 2003 season.

The Titans looked sluggish at times, but managed a 28-22 victory over the Houston Texans nonetheless.

"It's nice to finally be in a position to be somewhat critical after a win," said Titans' head coach Jeff Fisher. "It is certainly nice to get back-to-back wins now. Of course our goal now is to go out and get the next one."

Pretty remarkable talk from a team that was winless three weeks ago. It was a hard-fought loss at Indianapolis last month that spurred the change in their direction, as a philosophical offensive shift seemed to be made by Fisher and offensive coordinator Norm Chow.

They began to run the ball, run the ball, and run the ball. They did it with a three-headed monster known as Chris Brown, LenDale White and Travis Henry, but it slowly phased out Brown. Henry had a career day in the Titans' victory over the Washington Redskins and took over the main duties.

On Sunday against the Houston Texans, the Titans ran the ball 27 times for 111 yards, which are certainly respectable numbers, but not quite the staggering 42-carry, 193-yard extravaganza that was trotted out against the Redskins. The Titans acknowledged that the Texans' rush defense led to the relatively low rushing total.

"We knew coming in to the ball game that was the strength of Houston's defense," said Henry, who became a fantasy football stud in a matter of weeks. "They are good at stopping the run. They have four really good down linemen. They did a really good job on containing our runs. It was tough today, but we did other things right."

The Titans did other things well, and they needed to because Henry carried it 15 times for 29 yards. Vince Young (more on him later) threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown score against his hometown team, but it was impact plays on defense and special teams that did the trick.

In the first quarter, Tony Brown returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown, then Pacman Jones returned a punt 53 yards to pay dirt. The two non-offensive touchdowns kept the Titans on top even when the Texans mounted a little comeback in the fourth quarter.

"The difference today was that we got production in all three phases," said Fisher. "We score on special teams, we score on defense, turnovers on defense, pressure on the quarterback, and that certainly made the difference in the ballgame."

YOUNG AGAINST HOME

When the Houston Texans earned the right to the No. 1 pick in the past NFL draft, conventional wisdom said they would take Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush from USC. He was the best player in the country, played for the best team, and seemed to be the most NFL ready of anyone.

The only other realistic possibility was to go with the player that single- handedly gave the University of Texas the national championship. Vince Young gave them a lot of reasons to draft him, but perhaps the biggest was ticket sales, since Young was a Houston product.

Always the ones to skirt the common wisdom God gave a dog, the Texans took Mario Williams, a defensive end from North Carolina State.

This was the first battle with Young's hometown team and also the group that passed on him. So was it big for Young?

"It means something to me, my family and all the fans back home in Houston, but at the same time it meant the most here," said Young, referring to his new home in Tennessee. "Overall to me the effort of our team and the way its changing right now, it's looking real good so we have to continue working."

PACMAN'S DAY THAT ALMOST WASN'T

Pacman Jones had a punt return for a touchdown and an interception on Sunday, but it was his action on Saturday night that garnered some chatter.

On Saturday, Jones, who earlier in the year said the Titans needed to be more "thuggish," was cited for misdemeanor assault for allegedly spitting on a woman in a nightclub. Fisher allowed him to play because Fisher could not get all of the facts due to the time of the incident, a decision from a football perspective, Fisher probably did not regret.

"We are still involved in a fact-finding mission, if you will, because of the nature of the incident, and the time of the incident I was unable to come to a determination," said Fisher. "There is a chance, a very good chance, that there will be some disciplinary action taken."

Remember, Fisher was going to suspend Albert Haynesworth if the NFL wouldn't.

INJURIES

End Antwan Odom injured his knee, and it was very swollen on Monday morning. Linebacker David Thornton hurt his shoulder and Fisher was admittedly concerned about the injury. Wideouts David Givens (thumb) and Roydell Williams (finger) both look like they will return to practice this week.

NEXT WEEK

The Titans head to Jacksonville for a battle with the Jaguars. The Titans lead the all-time series, 13-10.
