(My Sportsbook) - The Chicago Cubs, who are idle today, continue to hold on to first place in the NL Central by a game over St. Louis. Yesterday, Damian Miller's single in the bottom of the fourth scored Ramon Martinez from second to provide the winning margin, as Chicago beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-1, at Wrigley Field. Eric Karros collected three hits in his second start of the season in the cleanup spot, and Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou and Martinez each smacked two hits for the Cubs. Chicago starter Shawn Estes (3-3) struggled with his control -- walking five -- but otherwise went seven very strong innings, giving up just three hits and one run, striking out seven. Antonio Alfonseca worked a hitless inning in his third game since coming off the disabled list and Joe Borowski struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season, lowering his ERA to 1.59. Sosa's two hits leave him just eight shy of 2,000 for his career, and he is hitting .305 this season with a .450 on-base percentage. Opponents are hitting only .231 against Cubs' pitchers so far this season.
