San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - San Diego Chargers standout linebacker Shawne Merriman is expected to drop his appeal of a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing a person close to discussions between Merriman's attorney, David Cornwell, and Adolpho A. Birch III, an NFL official who oversees testing, that the two met Monday night and were trying to figure out a way for the him to suspend the appeal and make an appearance at the Chargers' practice facility on Wednesday before the suspension starts. Typically, suspended players are not allowed at the team's headquarters. The NFL, which has not commented on the case, is expected to announce the suspension once the appeal is dropped. Cornwell believes the substance the linebacker tested positive for was the anabolic steroid nandrolone, contained in a nutritional supplement Merriman takes regularly. Merriman, who had 10 sacks last season, tied a career high with three sacks in San Diego's 38-24 defeat of the Rams. He has 8 1/2 sacks on the season, tied with Green Bay's Aaron Kampman for the league lead. If he does drop the appeal, Merriman would be eligible to return against the Buffalo Bills on December 3.
