Scottsdale, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Craig Counsell underwent surgery on Thursday to have a torn ligament in his right thumb repaired. He is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-August. Counsell sustained a dislocated thumb in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He was attempting to break up a double play at second base and jammed his right thumb hard into the bag. Thursday's hour-long procedure consisted of using a suture anchor to secure the torn ulna collateral ligament back to the bone to restore the stability to the thumb. "Given the surgical findings and the success of the repair, I am very optimistic for a full recovery," said Diamondbacks team surgeon Dr. Don Sheridan. "Craig's rehabilitation program will require 10-12 weeks in order to allow for ligament healing, restoration of range of motion and strengthening." The 32-year-old Counsell is hitting .276 with one homer and 10 RBI this season.
