Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - The
Florida Marlins announced in a press conference Sunday morning that they have fired manager Jeff Torborg and replaced him with Jack McKeon.
Torborg was made aware of the decision after the team's 5-4 defeat to Colorado on Saturday night. The setback dropped the Marlins to 16-22 and into a last-place tie with the New York Mets in the National League East.
Torborg took the reins in Florida during the 2002 campaign when they finished 79-83. Overall with the Marlins, Torborg was 95-105.
The 61-year-old Torborg has also managed with Cleveland, the White Sox, the Mets and Montreal, while compiling a 634-718 career record.
McKeon, 72, will become the team's sixth manager since its existence in 1993. He earned the Manager of the Year Award in 1999 when he led the Reds to a 96-67 record.
McKeon joins his fifth team in his managerial career and has an all-time record of 770-733.
Also on Sunday, the Marlins fired pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and replaced him with Wayne Rosenthal, who was the organization's minor league pitching coordinator.
Jeff Cox will also be the new bullpen coach, replacing Pierre Arsenault and Doug Davis, who was the minor league field coordinator, takes over as the new bench coach of the Marlins.
Florida has been ravaged by injuries this season as pitchers A.J. Burnett, Josh Beckett and Mark Redman are all on the disabled list. Burnett may not return until 2005 because of an elbow problem.
To make matters worse, Michael Tejera, who was converted from a reliever into the rotation, left the game after injuring his right ankle while running out a grounder in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday's game.
