Kings square series with Mavs

Sacramento, CA (My Sportsbook) - Hedo Turkoglu led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points, as the Sacramento Kings defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 99-83, in Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series at ARCO Arena. The best-of-seven series is tied at two wins apiece, with Game 5 scheduled for Tuesday in Dallas.

Vlade Divac contributed 16 points and nine rebounds and Peja Stojakovic collected 15 points, 12 boards and five assists for the Kings. Doug Christie chipped in 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for Sacramento, which rebounded from Saturday's double-overtime loss at home in Game 3.

"I thought he was unbelievable," said Kings head coach Rick Adelman about Christie. "Rebounding the ball, pushing the ball, attacking the basket early, defending, you can't say enough.

"And Peja was terrific on [Dirk] Nowitzki. He worked his tail off and made Nowitzki work. I give our guys a lot of credit. They responded when they had to respond."

Nowitzki made only 4-of-14 field goal attempts and finished with 11 points and 11 boards for the Mavericks, who had scored 132 and 141 points, respectively, in the previous two contests of the series. Michael Finley and Raja Bell each netted 16 points for Dallas, which never led and shot only 38 percent from the floor (36-of-95).

"They made us do some things that we've not normally been doing as a basketball team, being careless with the basketball," said Finley, alluding in part to the team's 16 turnovers. "I think the back-to-back might have had a little effect on that. When you get fatigued you start making foolish mistakes that you're usually not accustomed to."

Nowitzki was ejected with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter after arguing with the officials. Nick Van Exel managed only five points in the loss. He was coming off a 40-point effort on Saturday.

"We just didn't seem to have much tonight, didn't have our legs," said Dallas head coach Don Nelson. "Give them a lot of credit. Defensively, they made us work and the game was hard for us tonight."

The Kings opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run, capped by consecutive baskets from Keon Clark, to push their advantage to 34-24.

After the Mavericks cut the deficit to seven, Sacramento responded with a 13-4 burst, keyed by five points from Bobby Jackson, to grab a 52-36 advantage with just over a minute left in the period.

Finley hit a free throw with 42 seconds remaining in the stanza to complete the first-half scoring. Christie led the Kings in the opening 24 minutes with nine points, while Bell paced the Mavericks through two quarters with 10. Nowitzki had just one point in the half, as he went 0-for-6 from the floor.

Sacramento continued to pour it on in the third quarter. Divac's three-point play with 2:49 remaining in the period culminated a 9-0 run and staked the Kings to a 78-55 cushion.

The Mavericks then scored the next five points, including a three-pointer by Finley, to make it 78-60. Finley's shot from beyond the arc was the first successful three-point basket for Dallas after 11 misses.

"Tonight we just didn't have it," Finley said. "Unlike last night [when] we were making everything, tonight we couldn't make shots when we needed them."

Jackson then countered with a three-point play and the Kings eventually held an 81-61 lead after 36 minutes.

"Our team does not lack confidence," Adelman added. "We understand if everyone steps up, we have a chance to beat anybody and I think [the players] really believe that. A lot of teams wouldn't have come out with the effort that they came out with tonight."

The Mavericks never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter, as they were only able to get within 13 points with just over a minute left.

"They had more energy than we did," Nelson added. "I don't have any excuses. They outplayed us tonight. It was a hard back-to-back games for them as well as us."

The Kings used a 10-2 spurt in the first quarter to take an 18-10 lead. Turkoglu and Divac each had four points in the run.

Sacramento's advantage was still eight, but Dallas scored seven of the final 10 points of the period to pull within 24-20 after 12 minutes.

"The last two games our defense was a little lax and tonight was a much better effort," said Christie.

Jackson and Bell were also tossed with 1:14 left in the fourth period after both players received double-technicals. Bell started in place of Adrian Griffin, who missed the game with a sprained ankle.

Jackson scored 13 points, while teammate Mike Bibby added 12.

Dallas finished 3-of-20 from beyond the arc after going 19-of-42 from three- point range on Saturday. Sacramento also struggled outside the arc, making only 3-of-21 attempts.
