Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - The defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings will shoot for their third straight win tonight when they continue a three-game homestand with the
Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena.
Curtis Joseph recorded his 37th career shutout and Kirk Maltby added a shorthanded goal and an assist as the Red Wings blanked the Calgary Flames, 4-0, on Monday. Chris Chelios also had a shorthanded goal for the Red Wings, who moved to 4-2-0 on the season.
Joseph, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, turned aside 24 shots to post his first shutout as a Red Wing.
Tomas Holmstrom and Darren McCarty also had goals for Detroit, which tallied two shorthanded scores in a game for the second time this season and top the league with five tallies while down a man. Maltby has three shorthanded scores on the young season.
Detroit killed off nine power-play opportunities in the victory and have denied all 15 chances to its opponents in its last three games. The Red Wings have only allowed four power-play scores all season.
Los Angeles, which won three straight to start the season, has gone winless in its last two (0-1-1) and most recently skated to a 2-2 tie with the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
Mathieu Schneider and Derek Armstrong each found the back of the net during a five minute spurt in the third period and Felix Potvin made 17 stops for the Kings, who mustered just 16 shots on goal in the deadlock.
Armstrong's goal was his first tally since he scored twice with the Ottawa Senators during the 1997-1998 season.
Tonight's tilt begins a five-game, eight-day road trip for the Kings, who could get right wing Ziggy Palffy back in the lineup. Palffy, who is eligible to be taken off injured reserve, has missed three games with a strained groin. But center Bryan Smolinski has muscle spasms in his right leg and is may sit out Wednesday.
On Tuesday the club signed general manager Dave Taylor to a three-year contract. Taylor spent his entire 17-year playing career with the Kings, collecting 1,069 points to rank second in club history. During his tenure as GM, he has acquired franchise-type players such as Palffy, Jason Allison, Adam Deadmarsh and Felix Potvin
The Kings have had success versus Detroit recently and has won two straight and three of the last four. The Kings own a 10-7-3 mark in the last 20 meetings, but have lost three straight in the Motor City.
LA is 1-5-1 in its last seven and 3-5-3 in the last 11 at Joe Louis Arena.
