Ottawa, Ontario (My Sportsbook) - The Carolina Hurricanes seek their third consecutive victory tonight when they visit a well-rested
Ottawa Senators team at the Corel Centre.
Carolina, after dropping three-in-a-row, has disposed of the Devils and Islanders, including Tuesday night's 4-1 road pounding of New York. Sami Kapanen and Rod Brind'Amour scored power-play goals 23 seconds apart in the second period to give the Canes a commanding 3-0 lead, while Kevin Weekes stopped 36 shots in his fourth consecutive start in place of Arturs Irbe.
Weekes was the club's saving grace as Carolina was outplayed, and outshot by a 37-18 margin. Irbe is expected to return to the crease this evening, along with his 5.32 goals-against average and .806 save-percentage.
Kapanen scored twice on the night, and Kevyn Adams also tallied for the Hurricanes. Jeff O'Neill chipped in an assist and extended his personal points streak to six games, with a goal and six helpers in that time.
Carolina wraps up its brief road trek tonight, and returns home to face Chicago on Saturday.
Ottawa, meanwhile, has won two straight games but has had eight days off to ponder things. The Sens, after losing the season opener to New Jersey, have toppled Toronto and Phoenix, including last Tuesday's 2-1 triumph over the Coyotes.
Daniel Alfredsson scored with 5:14 remaining in the contest, deflecting a Mike Fisher feed past goaltender Sean Burke. The marker came a minute after Ottawa had killed off a full two-man advantage. Marian Hossa also tallied, while Patrick Lalime turned aside 26 shots.
Lalime has stopped 66-of-70 shots so far in three games this season, while Alfredsson, with two goals and two assists, is the only Senator to have points in each of the first three games.
The Senators quelled seven of the Coyotes' eight power-play chances, continuing their early-season prowess on the penalty kill. Through three games, Ottawa has stopped 18 of the 20 power plays it has faced, good for a 90 percent clip. That number ties the Sens for third in the entire National Hockey League.
Ottawa heads out to the road after tonight, as Jacques Martin's troops begin a three-game trip Thursday in Boston. The swing also includes stops in Montreal and Philadelphia.
The Sens went 3-0-1 against the Canes last season and are 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings overall. Carolina is 2-4-1 in its last seven trips to Ottawa.
