PITTSBURGH (AP) -Two college students charged with trying to break into Heinz Field over the weekend were released on their own recognizance following reduction of their $1 million bail Wednesday, the district attorney's office said.
Sudeep Paul, 21, and Anand Durvasula, 20, both Carnegie Mellon University students, were arrested trying to climb into the stadium about 2 a.m. Sunday, 14 hours before the Pittsburgh Steelers played the Denver Broncos, police said.
Paul, of Woodbury, N.Y., was charged by city police with conspiracy while Durvasula, of Morgan Hill, Calif., who police said climbed the fence before the men were caught, was charged with conspiracy and criminal trespass.
The incident followed an alleged threat concerning terrorist attacks on stadiums, but the FBI dismissed any possible terrorism connections. Instead, authorities said they believe the men were trying to sneak into the stadium so that Paul, a film student, could videotape Durvasula for a homemade music video.
Paul and Durvasula declined comment Wednesday night as they left the Allegheny County Jail.
Defense attorney Caroline Roberto said it was unfortunate that the two had to spend so much time in jail despite their cooperation with authorities.
``I think it's a testament to the character of the students that law enforcement was so quickly able to discover that there was a confusion or misapprehension of the facts,'' Roberto said. ``I think it is the times that we live in today.''
Preliminary hearings for the men were also rescheduled from Thursday to Nov. 29, said Mike Manko, spokesman for the Allegheny County District Attorney's office.
