New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Minnesota Twins leftfielder Jacques Jones has been named American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 11th. Jones led the American League last week in on-base percentage and batting average (both .560), and led the majors in hits (14) and tied for the lead in runs scored (10). He helped lead the Twins to a 5-1 record last week, with a .960 slugging percentage, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, seven RBI and two stolen bases. He matched a career high for hits in a game in a 7-3 win at Tampa Bay last Tuesday, going 5-for-5 with two homers. His 3-for-5 effort, scoring three times and driving in two runs, paced the Twins to a 9-8 victory over Boston on Sunday. This is the second-career Player of the Week honor for Jones, who previously won the award in June 2002. The other candidates for the award were fellow Minnesota outfielder Dustan Mohr, Detroit's Dmitri Young, Baltimore's Jay Gibbons, and Hank Blalock, Carl Everett, and Michael Young of Texas. Pitchers under consideration included Oakland's Mark Mulder, Detroit's Nate Cornejo, Seattle's Jamie Moyer, Minnesota's Kyle Lohse, and Anaheim's Brendan Donnelly.
