Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - Houston Astros shortstop Julio Lugo has cleared waivers and been given his unconditional release, the team announced on Tuesday. The club requested waivers on the troubled shortstop last Friday. Lugo was designated for assignment by the team on May 1, one day after he was arrested and charged with hitting his wife in the face and slamming her head on a car hood. According to a police spokesperson, Mabel Lugo claimed she was attacked by her husband last Wednesday afternoon, before Houston's 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Minute Maid Park. Lugo was arrested at the park following the game and charged with misdemeanor assault. If convicted, Lugo faces a $4,000 fine and could be sent to jail for up to one year. Mrs. Lugo has obtained a protective court order against her husband. The Astros actively support the Houston Area Women's Center, an organization that works with victims of domestic violence. The Astros' wives have organized the Center's annual fundraiser for the past 14 years. The 27-year old Lugo hit .246 (16-of-65) with one home run and four RBI for Houston this season. The Astros are in Pittsburgh for the second of a four-game set with the Pirates on Tuesday night.
