St. Louis, MO (My Sportsbook) - The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder/catcher Eli Marrero on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right ankle. Marrero underwent surgery to repair damaged ligaments in his ankle. He left Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs in the fourth inning after he slid to avoid teammate Jim Edmonds in the outfield and was carried off the field on a stretcher. The game was eventually postponed in the top of the fifth inning because of rain. The 29-year-old Marrero is hitting .227 with two home runs and 15 RBI in 24 games this season. Meanwhile, the Cardinals purchased the contract of catcher Chris Widger from Triple-A Memphis, recalled outfielder Kerry Robinson and optioned left-hander Kevin Ohme to Memphis. The team also transferred catcher Joe Girardi, out since spring training with a back injury, from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Girardi is eligible to be activated May 29.
