PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Jack Hinkle, a former running back and defensive back with the Philadelphia Eagles for six seasons, has died. He was 89. Hinkle died of natural causes Thursday at his home in Norristown, the team said. Hinkle played the 1941 season and from 1943-47 with the Eagles and had 1,067 yards on 238 carries, including five touchdowns. He also had nine interceptions. He missed the 1942 season because he was serving in the military, the Eagles said. His best season came in 1943, when the Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers merged to become the ``Steagles'' because of a shortage of manpower due to World War II. He rushed for a team-best 571 yards and three touchdowns, and had four interceptions. Hinkle played college football at Syracuse and began his NFL career with the New York Giants in 1940. He had three receptions for 23 yards in three games his first season. Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
