Jacksonville, FL (My Sportsbook) - David Garrard threw for 249 yards and Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew each scored a touchdown to lead the
Jacksonville Jaguars over the
New York Giants, 26-10, at Alltel Stadium.
Garrard completed 19-of-32 passes without an interception for the Jaguars (6-4), who rebounded from last week's disappointing loss to Houston by winning for the third time in four outings.
The Jacksonville defense held the NFC's leading offensive threat Tiki Barber to just 40 total yards of offense, as the Jags have not allowed more than 13 points in any of their last four games.
"We controlled the game in the trenches, but they were hanging around," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "Those kinds of situations can be dangerous. What you have to do is keep fighting, keep grinding. I thought you saw some maturity out there."
Eli Manning ended 19-of-41 for 230 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Giants (6-4), who have dropped two in a row and fell into a first-place tie with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.
"We just didn't play well and there is no excuse for it," said New York head coach Tom Coughlin, who was making his first appearance in Jacksonville since being fired as the Jags head coach after the 2002 season. "We expected to come in and play well. We were in the lead for the division. We had a lot at stake. We didn't play well. So we need to go back to work."
Plaxico Burress ended with 65 yards and score receiving and Jeremy Shockey had 82 yards on seven catches for New York, which had problems offensively all night and struggled on defense with a group of fill-ins.
Barber was held to only 27 yards rushing and Manning continued his mid-season struggles, as the Giants have yet to win since capturing five straight. Manning has completed just 50.5 percent of his passes over his last six games and if not for a productive fourth quarter it could have been worse.
"I'm concerned that we're not making the plays that allow for production," said Coughlin when asked about Manning. "We don't do a lot to help him get started. We had a lot of drops early on that hurt."
"I didn't play well and we just have to figure a way to get the passing game going," Manning said. "In the first half we hardly converted any third downs. Too many completions, too many negative plays. I have to start playing better football."
On the defensive side, New York continued to play without injured defensive ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora as well as starting linebacker Brandon Short and starting defensive back Sam Madison. The Giants have allowed 64 points in their last two games.
After Josh Scobee nailed a 24-yard field goal to give the Jags a 13-3 cushion 5:17 into the second half, the Giants offense finally put together their most effective drive of the game.
Following a Manning fumble that was returned for a touchdown and called back because of an illegal hands to the face call on the Jags, Manning woke up a little bit and orchestrated an 11-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. Manning hit Burress in the flat and he made two would-be tacklers miss on his way to a 25-yard score.
The New York defense then held the Jags to another field goal on their ensuing possession as Scobee hit a 23-yarder with 53 seconds left in the quarter for a 16-10 cushion.
Manning's first play of the Giants' next possession was a 53-yard completion to Burress, but the replays showed that the wide out didn't come down with the ball cleanly and it was overturned.
"I was screaming challenge, challenge, challenge and trying to get the flag out," Del Rio said. "The bottom line is that's a huge turning point."
New York then went three-and-out, and the Jags took over on their own 45-yard line and eventually increased their lead.
After a 3rd-and-7 49-yard completion from Garrard to Matt Jones brought the ball down to the three-yard line, Jones-Drew ran in on the next play for a 23-10 lead with 12:36 left in the contest.
Manning was then intercepted during the Giants' next drive with 9:29 left and Scobee hit a 48-yarder to make it a 16-point game with 5:39 left.
"He's doing a great job with all his fundamentals, which allow him to show you what a great leg he has," Del Rio said of Scobee. "He has a very strong leg. He's in a groove right now and hitting the ball well."
New York's Tim Carter then fumbled inside the Jags' 10-yard line and the Giants' chances escaped with it.
The team's exchanged first-quarter field goals. Jay Feely connected on a 40- yarder to cap the Giants' first drive, but Scobee answered with a 39-yarder on the ensuing possession to tie the score.
Jacksonville then went ahead in the second quarter when Taylor ended an eight-play, 57-yard drive with a 10-yard burst up the middle for a 10-3 lead just 4:45 into the frame.
Taylor later fumbled at the New York five-yard line as he was going in for a touchdown and Giants' linebacker Antonio Pierce recovered in the end zone with 1:50 left to keep it a seven-point game going into halftime.
The New York offense was horrid in the first half. Manning and his crew had only two first downs in the first 30 minutes of action with the first one coming with four minutes to play in the half.
