NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -The Tennessee Titans have found the perfect way to ease the pressure on rookie quarterback Vince Young: Run, run and run some more.
And they're doing it better than anyone in the NFL right now.
The Titans are averaging a league-best 166.2 rushing yards over their past six games, a stretch during which they've won three and lost by a point to Indianapolis and Baltimore. Coach Jeff Fisher it's what they wanted to do all along.
``We've spent an awful lot of time looking at it,'' he said. ``What types of things do we do well? What types of things should we stay away from? And let's do them over and over and over again.''
The Titans came into the season wanting to run, but they stumbled through the first four games averaging a mere 70.3 yards per game. They benched Chris Brown and turned to Travis Henry, a six-year veteran and one-time Pro Bowler who had been hampered by injuries and a suspension the past two seasons.
Henry has topped 100 yards rushing in four of the six games and posted a career-high 178 yards in their first victory this season at Washington. He broke off the longest run of his career, a 70-yarder, in last week's 31-13 win at Philadelphia.
``Travis is a very, very strong powerful inside runner with excellent vision, and he's hard to get down,'' Fisher said. ``That's been the case at the University of Tennessee. That was the case at Buffalo when he was healthy. We knew it was just a matter of time and him getting healthy again, and that's what he's done.''
Henry is averaging 4.7 yards per carry with 729 yards despite being deactivated twice this season.
The New York Giants (6-4) will try to stop Henry on Sunday. They allowed 97.4 yards rushing per game before giving up 165 yards to Jacksonville in a loss Monday night. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said they have to pay attention to Henry's outstanding numbers.
``We've played a lot of good ones. Let me tell you, we have played a lot of good football players, and he certainly is right in there with them,'' Coughlin said.
The Titans' rushing success has come despite losing left guard Zach Piller after the third game. He was replaced by Jacob Bell, who slid over from right tackle and is only in his third season. David Stewart replaced Bell at right tackle, and both he and left tackle Michael Roos are in their second NFL seasons.
Veteran center Kevin Mawae said the production speaks to how well the offensive line is playing across the board. He credits Henry with following blocks and hitting holes very well, and Mawae pointed out that everyone from the line to the tight end and even fullback Ahmard Hall hit every block in freeing Henry on his 70-yarder.
``Anytime everyone does the right things, your chances of success are much greater,'' Mawae said.
Even Young has been picking his spots to run, and is coming off 49 yards against the Eagles, with three of his six carries for first downs. He ranks second on the team in rushing with 225 yards.
Henry said running the ball well keeps Young out of third-and-long situations and helps keep them from getting backed up. Now they have to keep it up, and Henry thinks their timing couldn't be better with defenses banged up at this time of the season.
``Guys don't want to play run stop in the cold, cold weather. This is it. This is where I guess you make your money around this time, so we'll see,'' Henry said.
