Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Larry Johnson rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown to lead the
Kansas City Chiefs past the
Denver Broncos, 19-10, in a Thanksgiving night AFC West battle at Arrowhead Stadium.
Trent Green, who made his second straight start after returning from a concussion suffered in Week 1, completed 13-of-22 passes for 161 yards with an interception for the Chiefs (7-4), who have won two straight and are now in second place in the AFC West with a 3-1 division record.
"I am all smiles," said Green. "This was a big win for us. Johnson was the key for us. They couldn't stop him."
Tony Gonzalez returned to the lineup for Kansas City after missing last Sunday's game with a shoulder injury and had four catches for 35 yards.
"They have played in a lot of games like this," said Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards. "I had to get my team in a right mindset for this game and get the tempo up."
Jake Plummer was 25-of-39 for 216 yards with a touchdown and interception for the Broncos (7-4), who have lost two straight.
Denver running back Tatum Bell was inactive for the Broncos with turf toe and Mike Bell started in his place and struggled, rushing for just 28 yards on 10 carries. Javon Walker contributed by hauling in six passes for 55 yards.
"They played a good football game," said Denver head coach Mike Shanahan. "We made too many mistakes to be able to win on the road."
Denver won the coin toss and got the ball first, but Plummer was intercepted by Ty Law in Broncos' territory on the third play from scrimmage to start the game.
The Chiefs were able to flip the turnover into points after Lawrence Tynes drilled a 24-yard field goal to make it 3-0 in the early stages of the first quarter.
After both teams battled for field position, Kansas City put together a 13- play, 88-yard drive that spanned over 7 1/2 minutes, and ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Johnson to make it 10-0 with about three minutes left in the first half. Johnson had 32 yards rushing on the scoring drive.
"This is a real physical defense and you have to be confident coming into the game that you can run the football," said Johnson.
Denver finally got on the board with 14 ticks left in the second quarter after Jason Elam booted a 31-yard field goal to make it 10-3. Walker had four catches for 41 yards on the scoring march.
The Chiefs got the ball to start the second half and marched 51 yards on 10 plays as Tynes capped the drive with a 34-yard field goal to make it 13-3. The key play on the drive was a 31-yard pass down the left sideline to Samie Parker that put KC on the Denver 17-yard line.
Plummer and Denver responded after Tynes' field goal and scored a touchdown to make it 13-10 on the following possession. After moving 64 yards down to the Kansas City one-yard line, Stephen Alexander came down with the football over a defender in the left corner of the end zone after Plummer lobbed the ball in his direction.
Early in the fourth quarter, Tynes hit a 29-yard field goal to make it a six- point contest. Tynes' three points highlighted an 11-play drive that went 49 yards in almost 6 1/2 minutes.
The Chiefs then forced the Broncos to punt, but turned the ball over as Green was picked off by Darrent Williams at the Denver 30 with 9:20 remaining in the contest. The interception was the first thrown by KC in the last 141 pass attempts.
The Broncos were unable to pick up a first down following the turnover and punted the ball to the Chiefs, who added a 21-yard field goal by Tynes to make it 19-10 with just 2:42 remaining.
Plummer and the Denver offense never threatened the rest of the way.
