(My Sportsbook) - The
Calgary Flames ended a three-game road trip on Tuesday with a 4-3 overtime loss to the upstart Minnesota Wild.
However, it was the way that the Flames lost that had the Calgary locker room up in arms after the game.
A questionable hooking call on Martin Gelinas, who turned in his finest game with the team, in the extra session led to Cliff Ronning's game-winner 40 seconds later.
"Yeah...you lay a stick on a guy, and he falls like he was shot," Calgary coach Greg Gilbert said after the game. "But that's the game of hockey now, I guess. [The Wild is] a team that plays for the power play, obviously, and they did that tonight...they've got some guys who just don't skate too well when you touch 'em."
On the play in question, Minnesota's Willie Mitchell conspicuously tumbled into the boards after being tapped by Gelinas' stick. Gelinas responded by angrily slamming his stick into the boards when he saw the referee's arm go up.
"Any little hook, they're going call it," Gelinas said. "Obviously, it's overtime and it's four-on-four, you don't think they're going to call it. The guy's 6-5 and it didn't take much for him to go down but at the same time, they're calling the rules and he thought it was hooking...and he was probably right."
Gelinas, acquired via free agency in July after spending the last four-plus years in Carolina, assisted on Chris Drury's third-period goal that evened the game at 3-3, but all people will remember is the hook in overtime.
"I feel bad for the guys," Gelinas said. "One little hook at the end and it might have cost us two points."
The Flames came away with a possible three points out of six on their three- game road trip (1-1-1) and will open a four-game homestand on Thursday against the Dallas Stars.
WHAT'S NEXT
After the Stars visit, Calgary will play host to St. Louis and Buffalo before wrapping the set up against the Colorado Avalanche on November 2.
