Charlotte, NC (My Sportsbook) -
Carolina Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke practiced on Wednesday, but is still listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay as he continues to recover from the effects of a concussion.
"He was cleared [for practice], non-contact," said Panthers head coach John Fox. "He looked good. He had no headaches. He has responded well and was able to practice today."
Weinke was hurt late in the first half of last week's game against Atlanta. He spent the night in the hospital for observation and was diagnosed with a Grade II concussion.
Fox said he won't know if Weinke will be able to start against the Buccaneers until later this week.
"It will be day-to-day," Fox said. "We will make that decision later in the week. Right now, Randy Fasani took the starter reps today and had a good practice. We will evaluate Chris as it gets closer to game time."
Fasani replaced Weinke in last week's 30-0 loss to the Falcons and threw for just 100 yards on 6-of-18 passing with an interception and no touchdowns. The rookie from Stanford also ran eight times for 58 yards in his first action of the season.
Carolina selected Fasani in the fifth round -- 145th overall -- of the 2002 NFL Draft.
Fasani, if he gets the nod Sunday, would become the third quarterback to start for the Panthers this season.
Rodney Peete won the job in pre-season and started the first six games before undergoing knee surgery last week. He is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-November.
Weinke, in his first start of the season last week, completed 3-of-8 passes for 26 yards before leaving the game.
This season, Weinke has completed 10-of-21 passes for 140 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in three games. He started 15 games for Panthers as a rookie during the 2001 season.
The Panthers also signed quarterback Tim Hasselbeck to the practice squad earlier this week and could move him to the active roster for Sunday's game.
"There is a possibility of that and yet there is a possibility that we will just leave him on the practice squad," Fox said. "Chris' health and some other positions will also play into that."
Last week the Panthers went into the game with running back Dee Brown as their emergency quarterback.
"We went into the game last week with Dee Brown being our third quarterback, and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable about that at all again this week."
The Panthers also listed rookie running back DeShaun Foster as questionable for Sunday's game. The second-round pick from UCLA has not played this season after suffering cartilage damage in his left knee during the pre-season.
Linebackers Dan Morgan and Mark Fields also sat out Wednesday's practice because of groin injuries, as did safety Mike Minter, who has a biceps injury. All three are also listed as questionable.
The Panthers have lost four straight games after opening the season with three victories.
