Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The
Philadelphia 76ers try to remain alive in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Semifinals series when they welcome the
Detroit Pistons to First Union Center tonight.
The Sixers suffered a heartbreaking loss in Game 5 to put them in their current predicament. Detroit's Chucky Atkins hit a runner in the lane with less than one second remaining to lift the Pistons to a 78-77 victory.
Allen Iverson was held to 14 points, which was just one higher than his all-time playoff low. Iverson shot just 5-of-25 from the floor, but he handed out nine assists in the setback. Derrick Coleman logged his third double-double of the series with a game-high 23 points to go along with 11 boards. Eric Snow chipped in 16 points while Aaron McKie contributed 10 off the bench.
"This is definitely a team loss," Iverson said. "Every time we lose, I'm not going to put it on me."
Neither team shot well from the field, as Detroit managed to shoot 39.2 percent (29-74) while limiting the Sixers to just 37-percent shooting (29-of-79).
Rick Hamilton led the Pistons with 20 points, while Atkins added 17. Tayshaun Prince added 13 points to the victory.
"We ended up with a game played at an unbelievable level of competitiveness," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's what playoff basketball is all about. It doesn't matter if the games are high scoring if they are played like this."
Carlisle knows there's one more hill to climb.
"We understand the situation," Carlisle said. "We know it's going to be a loud energetic building in Philadelphia. That doesn't guarantee they're going to win the game. With us being up 3-2 with a chance to close it out, it doesn't guarantee we're going to go in there and beat them. It's going to come down to the team that plays the hardest and makes the fewest mistakes, in all likelihood. That's going to be our goal, to play hard and to continue to work at the defensive end. We've got to do a better job rebounding the ball. And if we do those things, we'll have a chance."
The Pistons have dropped 14 of their last 15 playoff games on the road. The winner of this series will take on New Jersey in the next round.
Game 7, if necessary, will be Sunday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
