(My Sportsbook) - The Montreal Expos try for their fifth win in six tries this afternoon when they continue their fur-game set against the
Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Last night, Michael Barrett's two-run homer in the top of the ninth snapped a tie game and lifted the Expos to a 4-1 win over Colorado. Orlando Cabrera and Wil Cordero each drove in runs for the Expos, who have won four of their last five and eight of 11.
Todd Helton drove in the only run of the game for the Rockies, who had their win streak halted at three games.
With the game tied entering the top of the ninth, Montreal scored three times off Colorado reliever Nelson Cruz. Jamey Carroll got the inning started with a one-out single before Barrett launched his fourth homer of the year over the center field wall to give the Expos a 3-1 lead.
The Expos were not finished in the ninth as pinch-hitter Ron Calloway singled, stole second base and went to third on a base hit by Endy Chavez. After Chavez stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, Cabrera delivered a base hit to right that drove in Calloway to make it a 4-1 contest. Chavez also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate by Larry Walker.
Rocky Biddle then struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth before walking the next two to put the tying run at the plate. But Biddle notched his 11th save by getting Jay Payton to fly out to right field for the final out of the contest.
Luis Ayala (3-1) pitched to one batter to earn the victory in relief for Montreal. He came in to face Jose Hernandez with runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and retired him on a grounder to first.
Zach Day takes the hill tonight for the Expos and is 4-1 on the year with a 2.73 ERA. The 24-year-old righthander is unbeaten in his last three decisions and has not suffered a loss since falling to the Chicago Cubs in his second start of the year back on April 8.
In his last outing, Day allowed a run on eight hits over six innings to the San Francisco Giants, as his team rolled to a 4-3 win.
This will be Day's first-ever start against the Rockies. He did, however, have a two-inning stint out of the bullpen against Colorado and was reached for two runs on three hits.
Montreal is 12-8 on the road this year, while the Rockies are 14-6 at Coors Field. Montreal is also 10-4 versus the NL West this season.
