Browns' Frye injures wrist, Saints' Horn re-aggravates groin injury

The Cleveland Browns might have to turn to their big-footed backup quarterback again for their next game.

Charlie Frye injured his right wrist - and may have broken it - during the Browns' 31-28 overtime victory over Kansas City on Sunday. He was replaced by Derek Anderson, who was more known for having size 17 shoes at age 10 before throwing two TD passes Sunday in the final nine minutes of regulation to rally the Browns.

Frye was hurt on Cleveland's first offensive series when he braced himself while being knocked down. He stayed in and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Braylon Edwards before being taken to the locker room for X-rays.

Frye returned with 5:53 left before halftime, and drove the Browns to a tying score with 19 seconds left. When Cleveland came out for the second half, Frye was wearing a large brace on his wrist and an orange jacket, but no shoulder pads.

``I tried to fight it off for a while,'' said Frye, who also hurt his left ankle on the same play. ``At halftime, the trainer pulled the plug on it. I should know (Monday) just how serious it is.''

Tight end Kellen Winslow blurted out that Frye's wrist was broken, but later backtracked on his claim. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Frye will be evaluated Monday at the Cleveland Clinic and the club will have more information after more tests.

If Frye isn't ready to play Thursday night when the Browns (4-8) visit the Pittsburgh Steelers, Anderson will likely be the starter.

At New Orleans, Saints wide receiver Joe Horn aggravated a groin injury while making a first-down catch in the first quarter of a 34-10 win over San Francisco.

Horn struggled with the injury for a month and was inactive for a pair of games in early November because of it. He remained in uniform and on the sideline after coming out of the game.

San Francisco offensive lineman Adam Snyder had to be helped off the field with an apparent injury to his right leg in the first quarter. He was taken to the locker room on a cart. He didn't return.

San Diego wide receiver Keenan McCardell and linebacker Randall Godfrey were injured in a 24-21 win over Buffalo.

McCardell hurt his left calf and didn't return after making a 7-yard catch in the third quarter. Godfrey, the Chargers' second-leading tackler, hurt his left calf in the first quarter and didn't return.

McCardell said it's the same injury that prevented him from playing in San Diego's 21-14 win against Oakland last weekend. He said his calf was still sore following the game.

Backup safety Clinton Hart (left ankle) and reserve receiver Kassim Osgood (elbow) were also hurt when the Bills attempted an onside kick in the final minute.

Buffalo starting linebacker Angelo Crowell injured his lower left leg after LaDainian Tomlinson's 4-yard run on the Chargers' first possession. Crowell hopped off the field unable to put any weight on his left foot, and coach Dick Jauron said Crowell will have further tests before determining the extent of the injury.

Cornerback Terrence McGee also hurt his ankle when he was tackled by Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding during a 37-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. McGee saw limited playing time the rest of the first half and didn't play in the second.

New England rookie running back Laurence Maroney left early in the second half of the Patriots' 28-21 win over Detroit after he had the wind knocked out of him. He played in just two series, running four times for 14 yards and returning one kickoff for 25 yards. After that, Kevin Faulk and Patrick Pass handled the kickoff return duties.

At Chicago, Chester Taylor ran for 99 yards before bruising his ribs in the third quarter of Minnesota's 23-13 loss to the Bears. He returned to the game, but didn't carry the ball again.

Vikings backup quarterback Brooks Bollinger hurt his left shoulder on a sack by Adewale Ogunleye late in the game and didn't return.

Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris was helped off the field in the third quarter Sunday with a sprained knee. Defensive back Nathan Vasher suffered a hamstring injury.

Steelers safety Ryan Clark injured his groin during Pittsburgh's 20-3 win over Tampa Bay.
