Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - Phil Dawson's 33-yard field goal, with 7:25 left in overtime, capped a big comeback, led by Cleveland backup quarterback Derek Anderson, as the Browns pulled out a 31-28 win over the
Kansas City Chiefs.
Cleveland starter Charlie Frye completed 11-of-13 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. He left the game early in the second quarter with a right wrist injury after being hit following a pass attempt.
Frye was taken to the locker room for X-rays that turned out to be negative. He did come back late in the second quarter, but was replaced in the third by the second-year signal caller Anderson, who went 12-of-21 for 171 yards with two touchdowns. Anderson also had a key 33-yard rush in overtime that set up Dawson's winning kick.
Anderson came into the contest having never thrown a pass in the league and taking only one snap under center.
Reuben Droughns rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown for the Browns (4-8), who snapped a two-game skid. Joe Jurevicius hauled in six passes for 75 yards.
"This one feels really good," said Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel. "I am so happy for the players and the team. We hung in there and fought all game long to pull out the victory. If we can do this week in and week out, we will arrive."
Trent Green completed 24-of-32 passes for 297 yards with four touchdowns and an interception for the Chiefs (7-5), who were looking to win three straight.
Kansas City currently sits in a tie with Denver for second place in the AFC West, three games behind the San Diego Chargers.
Eddie Kennison had seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City while Tony Gonzalez hauled in nine passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Larry Johnson rushed for 110 yards and has surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark in six out of the last seven games.
The Chiefs won the coin toss in overtime and elected to receive. KC was unable to move the ball down field and had to punt.
With the ball on the 22-yard line, Anderson quickly completed a pass to Kellen Winslow to the 48 for 26 yards. After moving the ball to KC 45-yard line, Anderson, who was under heavy pressure, scrambled up the right sideline for 33 yards and after dodging a few tacklers, was stopped at the 12-yard line.
After two running plays for negative yards, Dawson split the uprights with a 33-yard field goal to complete the comeback for the Browns that started in the third quarter.
After the Chiefs went up 28-14 in the third, Cleveland answered and pulled to within a touchdown scoring on the ensuing possession. Steve Heiden caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Anderson with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest. The TD pass was the first of Anderson's NFL career.
The Browns' defense then forced the Chiefs to punt and Cleveland got the ball back and marched down to the three-yard line and Anderson found Heiden again, this time wide open in the back of the end zone to tie the game at 28-28 with just 35 seconds left in regulation. That capped a 70-yard drive.
"Offensively we moved the ball pretty well," said Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards. "We scored enough points in my estimation to win the game. We could not stop them and you have to give them credit. They deserved to win. They played better than us."
Cleveland won the coin toss and scored on the opening possession of the contest. Frye led an eight-play, 63-yard drive that ended with Braylon Edwards catching a 23-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the end zone. Frye completed 4-of-4 passes for 62 yards on the march.

The Chiefs went up 14-7 with 6:03 remaining in the second quarter after Gonzalez made a leaping nine-yard TD grab over Leigh Bodden in the end zone. Gonzalez had three receptions for 39 yards on the scoring drive.

Kansas City got the ball at the start of the second half and scored a touchdown to take a 21-14 lead. Green connected with a wide open Kris Wilson in the end zone for a six-yard TD pass. A 39-yard pass to Kennison on the first play of the drive put the Chiefs into Cleveland territory at the 38-yard line.
The Chiefs went up 28-14 with 12:19 left in the final quarter after Green and Gonzalez hooked up for a 23-yard touchdown pass, Gonzalez's second TD of the game. Kansas City traveled 99 yards on 14 plays on the drive that spanned over 7 1/2 minutes.
