Colts caution against panic after 2 losses

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Tony Dungy isn't panicking.

But with two losses in three games, a run defense that continues to allow nearly 164 yards per game and an offense that has topped 20 points only once in four weeks, Dungy certainly is concerned about his Indianapolis Colts.

A day after their second loss dropped them into a tie with San Diego for the AFC's best record, Dungy again pleaded with his players to correct mistakes that are becoming common.

``It is as bad as it seems,'' he said. ``What we've got to do is do what it takes to get it back right. We're not very far, but you can't say everything's fine when it isn't fine.''

Dungy does not publicly criticize individuals and rarely calls out his team, but Sunday's 20-17 loss exposed even more of the problems Dungy has been complaining about for weeks.

The Colts (10-2) missed a chance to wrap up their fourth straight AFC South title after seemingly taking control with an early 14-0 lead. For the first time in 62 games, a Dungy-coached team blew a 14-point lead.

On Monday, Dungy challenged his defense to tackle better and get off the field on third down. He called on his offense to limit the penalties and turnovers that have become more prevalent.

Consider the message received.

``We have to take care of our responsibilities,'' defensive tackle Raheem Brock said. ``It's basic football. We're not consistent like we need to be. It's tackling and filling gaps like we should.''

Or the Colts almost certainly will lose control of their playoff destiny.

A win at Jacksonville this week would again give Indy the division title. And with four teams - the Colts, San Diego, Baltimore and New England - all within a game of each other in the chase for home-field advantage and the critical bye week, the Colts still control their own fate because of tiebreaker advantages.

Those, Dungy knows, could vanish in the blink of an eye if things don't change quickly.

It's an unusual predicament for Indy, which wrapped up the AFC's top seed with three games left last year. Dungy wants to see how these Colts respond.

``If we play like we can play, I think we'll be OK,'' he said. ``If we don't, it probably doesn't matter anyway. ``We're certainly not as sharp as we need to be going into the stretch run.''

Indianapolis has committed 30 penalties and 11 turnovers in the past five weeks compared with 37 penalties and four turnovers the first seven weeks.

And no miscue was bigger Sunday than Ben Utecht's offensive pass interference call midway through the fourth quarter Sunday. That wiped out a touchdown pass and forced the Colts to settle for a tying field goal.

``That was not very good technique on our part,'' Dungy said. ``I'd have called pass interference, too,'' he said. ``I'm frustrated and disappointed that we're not playing the way we should be, and we've got to get it fixed.''

The run defense, a problem all season, took another step backward Sunday after showing signs of improvement the previous couple of weeks. Tennessee ran for 219 yards - 78 coming on Vince Young scrambles.

The Titans also converted five-of-seven third downs in the second half, when the Colts struggled to get off the field, and players know they must fix it before the playoffs start.

``If we can't stop the run, we're not going anywhere,'' Brock said. ``If we can't tackle, we're not going anywhere.''

Still, Dungy cautioned against making wholesale changes. He wants his players to work on the details, remain focused and play with more urgency.

``It's nothing phenomenal, no system changes, no personnel changes,'' the coach said. ``We've just got to get back to doing the things we want to do like knowing the snap count and catching the ball when it's thrown to you.''
