Bronx, NY (My Sportsbook) - John Thomson tossed a three-hitter and Juan Gonzalez homered as the
Texas Rangers downed the
New York Yankees, 5-1, at Yankee Stadium.
Thomson (3-4) allowed just one run with nine strikeouts and five walks for Texas, which completed a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium for the first time.
Rafael Palmeiro registered two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a run in the victory.
Alfonso Soriano stroked two hits and scored the lone run for New York, which lost for the sixth time in its last seven games.
Mike Mussina (7-2) lost his second straight start after opening the year 7-0. He lasted seven frames and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts. Mussina did not permit a walk for the Yankees, who suffered their first sweep of the campaign.
New York opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Soriano led off with a double to left and stole third base. Derek Jeter then grounded out to second and Soriano crossed the plate.
The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. After Hank Blalock and Rodriguez both struck out, Palmeiro stroked a single to right. Gonzalez followed with a home run over the wall in left-center, his 14th of 2003.
With two outs in the fifth, Thomson walked Bubba Trammell on four pitches. Soriano, who had roped his second double in two at-bats in the third, then came to the plate as the go-ahead run but struck out to end the inning.
Texas added two runs in the sixth. Consecutive doubles by Rodriguez and Palmeiro put the visitors ahead, 3-1. Mussina then put away Gonzalez and Ruben Sierra, but Michael Young's grounder popped off Soriano's glove and allowed Palmeiro to cross the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees got the tying run to the plate with two outs. Bernie Williams drew a walk and moved to third on Hideki Matsui's double to the gap in left-center. Thomson, though, struck out Jorge Posada to end the inning.
The final run came in the top of the ninth. Young singled and stole second, moved to third on Einar Diaz's bunt and scored on Carl Everett's single.
The Rangers swept a two-game series at Yankee Stadium on May 10-11, 1983. The Yankees were swept at home for the first time since Seattle won three in the Bronx last May 3-5.
