Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Arizona powerful righthander Curt Schilling will try to continue his domination on the mound tonight, as the Diamondbacks open a three-game series against the
San Francisco Giants at Bank One Ballpark.
Schilling is 3-0 over his last four starts, but what's been more impressive is that he's coming off back-to-back shutouts. The 36-year-old allowed just four hits in a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 9, and then he tossed a two-hitter versus his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies last Wednesday. Over those two games, Schilling has struck out 24 batters while surrendering only one walk.
Since undergoing an emergency appendectomy in mid-April, Schilling has been spectacular except for a May 3 start against Atlanta when he allowed eight hits and five runs in five innings in a no-decision.
Schilling was 3-1 in four starts versus the Giants last year. Over his career, he is 10-8 with two saves and a 2.97 ERA against San Francisco.
Jesse Foppert will pitch tonight for the NL West-leading Giants. The 22-year- old righthander, who will make his first career appearance against Arizona, is 2-1 over his last three starts, but is coming off a loss on Wednesday against Montreal.
Yesterday, Tony Womack went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, leading the Diamondbacks to an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brandon Webb pitched into the eighth inning to earn the win for the Diamondbacks, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series and snapped a three-game losing streak.
Junior Spivey homered for Arizona, which scored four times on sacrifice flies and had runs in each of the first six innings. David Dellucci had two hits and two runs batted in, while Lyle Overbay added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored in the victory.
The Giants lost for the seventh time in nine games yesterday following a 5-1 defeat to the New York Mets at Pac Bell Park. Marquis Grissom homered and finished with two hits for the Giants.
This is the first meeting of the season. San Francisco won 11 of the 19 contests versus the D'Backs last year, including the final three. The Giants went 5-4 at Bank One Ballpark in 2002.
Arizona is 1-2 on its current 10-game homestand.
