Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - Carlos Pena belted three homers and drove in a career-high seven runs, but the Tigers still dropped their fifth straight game on Monday night. Pena is the first Detroit player to hit three homers in a game since Bobby Higginson did it on June 24, 2000.
Casey Blake's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning helped the Cleveland Indians complete a 10-9 comeback victory over Detroit at Jacobs Field.
Jody Gerut belted a three-run homer and knocked in four runs for the Indians, who rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take the opener of a four-game set.
The Indians scored three times in the home seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Jamie Walker started the inning for Detroit and Milton Bradley greeted the reliever with a double to left. Bradley then scored on Josh Bard's double before Blake's two-run shot gave Cleveland its first lead of the game.
Pena's third homer of the game and sixth of the season had given the Tigers a 9-7 lead in the seventh inning. Pena stepped to the plate with two outs and Higginson on second base and blasted the first pitch from Billy Traber over the wall in right.
Traber (2-2) yielded two runs in 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to post the win. David Riske notched his first save of the year with 1 2/3 perfect innings.
Walker (1-1) was dealt the loss for Detroit after allowing three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo homer by Pena.
Detroit then piled five runs on in the third frame to take a 6-0 advantage. Omar Infante led off with a single to center and Gene Kingsale would reach first on a fielding error by third baseman Blake. After a sacrifice bunt, Higginson was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Infante then scored on Dmitri Young's base hit to right before Pena blasted his first career grand slam to left.
The Indians answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead in half. Matt Lawton singled leading off, but Detroit starter Gary Knotts retired the next two batters. However, Bradley worked a two-out walk and Gerut followed with a three-run homer to center.
Cleveland sliced the lead to 6-5 with one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Blake drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and raced home on Ben Broussard's double to deep left.
Bradley then singled with one out in the fifth and Gerut plated the runner with a base hit up the middle.
Kevin Witt hit a solo homer in the sixth to give Detroit a 7-5 edge, but the Indians drew even with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame. Blake doubled to start things, Broussard drew a walk and Brandon Phillips reached on a bunt to load the bases. Lawton then laced a single up the middle to drive in the tying runs.
