Flushing, NY (My Sportsbook) - New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza will be out "an indefinite amount of time" after an examination was performed by team physician Dr. Andrew Rokito in New York Tuesday. Although he will not need surgery, it is highly probably that he will miss more time than the originally anticipated six to eight weeks. Rokito, who performed the examination at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and NYU Medical Center, confirmed that the All-Star catcher has a right groin strain. Classified as a Grade Three strain, the most severe type, Piazza suffered an avulsion of the adductor muscle where the muscle is partially torn off the bone. Piazza sustained the injury during a game against the San Francisco Giants on May 16 while trying to evade an inside pitch from Jason Schmidt. The injury comes about two weeks after Piazza missed a game because he had a benign mole removed from his abdomen. Piazza had previously missed 10 other games due to injury and a four-game suspension for a spring-training incident. He is batting .336 with seven home runs and 15 RBI for the Mets, who sat in fourth place in the National League East prior to Tuesday's contest against Philadelphia at Shea Stadium.
