=== Detroit Tigers Team Report - May 23 === (My Sportsbook) - The Detroit Tigers try to make it two straight wins tonight when they open a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Eric Munson's sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning lifted Detroit to a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, as the Tigers avoided a sweep and halted their losing streak at seven games. Detroit finally reached double digits in the win column, improving to 10-35 on the season. Dmitri Young and Bobby Higginson each added a pair of hits in the victory. Franklyn German (2-2) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief, while Steve Sparks worked a perfect 11th for his second save. Nate Cornejo started for the Tigers and allowed two runs on just four hits in 7 1/3 solid innings. Shortstop Omar Infante missed his third straight game with soreness in his back and is questionable for tonight's affair. Mike Maroth gets the call tonight for the Tigers and is still searching for his first victory of the season. Maroth, 0-9 with a 5.73 ERA, is winless in his last 11 decisions and has not posted a victory since beating the Kansas City Royals last September 16. The major league record for consecutive losses to start a season is 14 by Joe Harris (1906) of the Boston Pilgrims and Matt Keough (1979) of the Oakland Athletics. Maroth, who lost to the White Sox earlier in the season, is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three career starts against Chicago. Detroit has hit fewer home runs (32) than any team in baseball this season. The Tigers have scored just 135 runs, 35 fewer than the next closest team.
