Houston, TX (My Sportsbook) - Rudy Tomjanovich announced during a Friday press conference that he is stepping down as head coach of the
Houston Rockets. However, he will remain with the organization in a different capacity.
The 54-year-old Tomjanovich took a medical leave of absence during this past season to treat bladder cancer.
"I know right now what's best for me is to take a lesser role, take those burdens off of me," said Tomjanovich. "That's tough because I really feel good about this team and we did make great strides."
Tomjanovich has been a part of the Rockets for more than three decades and coached the franchise to its only NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. However, Houston has failed to reach the playoffs in four consecutive seasons.
"That's the hardest part about this thing, being a member of a team is like a family," Tomjanovich noted as he held back tears. "That's the toughest part, being away from the coaches and the players."
In 11 1/2 seasons as coach of the Rockets, Tomjanovich posted an overall record of 503-397, including a 43-39 mark during the 2002-03 campaign.
"It's been over a decade with one team and it's been great," added Tomjanovich. "I have nothing but great memories, but the responsibility of having everyone counting on you for their happiness in that sport is a big responsibility. I love that job and I've had it for a long time. I just think at this stage with the health situation, the best thing is to back off and try to be just a regular guy for a while."
The San Diego Rockets made Tomjanovich the second overall selection in the 1970 draft and he started the franchise's first game in Houston on October 14, 1971.
