Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The New York Mets activated outfielder Jeromy Burnitz from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, started him in center, and watched as he belted a grand slam in the team's 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Burnitz was sidelined for four weeks with a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone. He is expected to be available for the first of a three-game set against the division-leading Atlanta Braves. Burnitz led off the ninth against Houston closer Billy Wagner on April 22 and was hit in the left hand. He stayed in the game, but underwent x-rays afterwards. The results showed a non-displaced fracture of the bone located just below his pinky finger. He was placed on the disabled list the following day. The Mets have been ravaged by injuries this season. Catcher Mike Piazza, first baseman Mo Vaughn, and pitchers Scott Strickland and David Cone headline a list of seven players currently on the team's DL. Burnitz, who struggled mightily last season, was off to an encouraging start, batting .279 with three home runs and seven RBI this season before the injury. In 2002, he finished with just a .215 batting average during his first year back in a Mets uniform since 1994. The Mets sent Jeff Duncan to Double-A Binghamton.
