Raul Mondesi had two hits, including a home run, for the Yankees, who have lost three of their last five and seven of their last 10 overall. Mike Mussina (7-3), the New York starter, absorbed his third straight loss. In six innings he permitted four runs and seven hits while striking out six. Mussina fell to 16-8 in 28 career starts against Toronto. New York, which managed just six hits, has lost nine of their last 10 at home. The defeat, combined with a Boston victory, marked the first time that the Yankees fell out of first place in the AL East this season. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter missed the game with sore legs, but is expected to return to the starting lineup today New York will give the ball to David Wells today. The lefthander will try to post his seventh victory of the season. He had another solid outing his most recent appearance on the mound, going 6 2/3 innings in a victory against the Red Sox. Wells allowed just one run on nine hits, while striking out four. Wells has not pitched particularly well against his former team, posting a record of 4-5 and an ERA of 5.20. In his one previous outing against Toronto this season, he was pulled after five innings and five runs allowed on 11 hits.
