Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) - The
San Diego Padres should have a tough time trying to halt their major-league high nine-game losing streak Saturday when they face Curt Schilling and the
Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark.
Schilling has won his last three decisions after starting the year 0-2. However, the righthander failed to earn a decision in his last outing and had his shutout streak snapped at two games.
Against the Giants Monday, Schilling allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out seven. Arizona eventually won the contest, 4-3.
For his career, Schilling is 13-7 with a 2.74 ERA in 31 appearances -- 19 starts -- against the Padres.
Brian Lawrence draws the tough task of opposing Schilling on Saturday. Lawrence is winless in his last seven starts (0-5), with his last victory coming way back on April 11 against Colorado.
In his most recent outing, the righthander suffered the loss against Atlanta Sunday, permitting six runs on 11 hits in seven frames. He walked one and struck out two.
Lawrence is 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in five career starts against Arizona.
In the opener of the four-game set on Friday, Danny Bautista snapped an eighth-inning tie with a three-run home run and drove in four runs to lift the Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win over the Padres.
Bautista and Steve Finley each went 3-for-4 for the Diamondbacks, who won for just the third time in eight games. Bautista's home run was his first in 152 at-bats, with his last homer coming May 3, 2002, against Montreal. He also recorded his second career four-RBI game.
Jason Bay, making his major league debut after being called up Friday to replace the injured Mark Kotsay, homered in the ninth for his first major league hit. However, it was not enough to prevent the Padres from losing for the 22nd time in their last 25 games.
Matt Mantei surrendered Bay's solo home run in the ninth, but still managed to pick up his seventh save of the season by pitching the ninth.
Mike Koplove (2-0) earned the win, pitching a perfect eighth inning of relief for Arizona. Diamondbacks starter Brandon Webb gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one over 6 1/3 innings.
Mike Matthews (1-2) took the loss for the Padres, giving up three runs on two hits and a pair of walks while striking out one in one inning of work.
San Diego is only 6-19 on the road this season, while the D'backs are just 12-15 at home.
