St. Louis, MO (My Sportsbook) - St. Louis Cardinals starting second baseman Fernando Vina was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a torn right hamstring. He is expected to miss the next six-to-12 weeks. According to team physician Dr. George Paletta, the time of recovery depends on whether surgery is performed. Paletta also noted that Vina will be re-evaluated in 48 hours after the swelling goes down. Vina, who left Sunday's 8-7 loss at Pittsburgh after the fifth inning with the injury, is batting .262 with four homers and 19 RBI this season. "When you lose a guy, you're reminded of his value," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was quoted as saying on the team's website. "People talk about Fernando struggling at the top of the lineup, but he's the best guy we have and he's proven he's capable of igniting us." Vina was replaced by Miguel Cairo on Monday in the first of a four-game set against the Houston Astros. Cairo went 2-for-5 and scored two runs in the 10-5 win.
