Toronto Blue Jays Team Report - May 27 ===
(My Sportsbook) - The Blue Jays scored a run in the first inning and then went into hibernation until the sixth, at which point the squad exploded for 10 runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 11-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a four-game set at SkyDome on Monday.
Mike Bordick's RBI single capped a five-run rally in the sixth inning, putting the Jays ahead to stay and earning them their fifth win in a row. Chris Woodward homered and knocked in two runs, while Carlos Delgado and Vernon Wells each had two RBI for the Blue Jays, who were coming off an improbable four-game sweep of the New York Yankees. Toronto's five-game win streak matches a season-high.
Josh Phelps added a solo homer and Josh Towers recorded the win. Towers tossed one-third of an inning in relief of Mark Hendrickson, who permitted three runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walks. Jeff Tam pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first save.
Toronto, which posted an 8-2 mark on its recent 10-game road trip, won five straight from April 4-9 and May 1-6.
On the injury front, outfielder Shannon Stewart missed his second straight game with tightness in both hamstrings while third baseman Eric Hinske is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks with an injured hand. He will have surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right hand. The Blue Jays placed Hinske on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 24.
Bordick has been on a tear as of late, hitting safely in a career-high 14 straight games and posting 12 RBI during that stretch. Doing it all season has been Delgado, who leads the American League in home runs and RBI with 15 and 51, respectively.
Not to be outdone, Wells is second in the league in RBI with 48 and is currently batting an even .300, compared to .324 for Delgado.
Roy Halladay heads to the hill for the Jays tonight, a winner in each of his last five starts. The righthander had been 0-2 prior to the month of May.
Most recently, Halladay picked up the win against the Yankees on Thursday. He surrendered two runs on nine hits in seven frames, while walking none and striking out five.
Halladay is winless in five career appearances -- two starts -- against the White Sox with an ERA of 3.60.
With their recent surge the Blue Jays are now 10-12 at home and four games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. The team plays the next six at SkyDome before hitting a pair of National League parks (St. Louis and Cincinnati) during the first week of June.
