The Arizona Cardinals' encouraging late-season run hit a snag Sunday in San Francisco when rookie quarterback Matt Leinart sprained his left shoulder late in the first half.

Roderick Green's sack sent Leinart him to the locker room. He returned to the sideline in street clothes during the second half.

Leinart won't require surgery, but he won't play next week in the Cardinals' season finale at San Diego, either. He will undergo an MRI exam on Wednesday.

The 2004 Heisman Trophy winner from USC was outstanding against the 49ers, going 9-for-13 for 162 yards and a touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Leinart has passed for 2,547 yards and 11 TDs this season despite sitting out most of the Cardinals' first four games.

Kurt Warner, who lost his job to Leinart in October, replaced him this time. Arizona had won three of five under Leinart, but is out of playoff contention after an eight-game losing streak early in the season.

Leinart's injury was just one of several personnel problems for both teams. Linebacker Gerald Hayes, Arizona's leading tackler, was scratched for the first time all season with injured ribs, while cornerback David Macklin strained his hamstring early in the second half.

Among other NFL injuries on Sunday:

- Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant was helped off the field early in the third quarter against San Diego with a sprained right ankle. He said he will get further tests Monday, but fears it is a high ankle sprain.

- Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs broke his shoulder blade in a 37-31 overtime loss at St. Louis.

- Bears starting fullback Jason McKie injured an ankle on the opening possession against Detroit and didn't return.

- Browns quarterback Derek Anderson separated his right shoulder in the fourth quarter against Tampa Bay when he got sacked and was landed on by Chris Hovan. Ken Dorsey replaced him.

- Oft-injured offensive lineman Jonas Jennings dislocated his right shoulder in the San Francisco 49ers' game against Arizona. Jennings missed 13 games with a shoulder injury last season and sat out two games this season with a torn finger ligament and a wrist injury.

- Giants kick returner Chad Morton tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee covering a punt in the second quarter.

- Jaguars safety Deon Grant injured his hamstring against the Patriots and didn't return.

- Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, an All-Pro last season, returned after missing the Steelers' previous three games with a knee injury, only to be beaten twice for touchdowns.

- Umpire Garth DeFelice was hit in the neck by a pass in the Patriots-Jaguars game and was taken to a hospital for further examination. DeFelice had X-rays at Alltel Stadium before being transported by ambulance to the hospital. An NFL official said DeFelice has a history of neck problems.

Among other inactives: Bears DBs Todd Johnson (ankle) and Charles Tillman (back); Lions DB Fernando Bryant (concussion) and KR Eddie Drummond (hip); Saints WR Joe Horn (groin); Patriots TE Benjamin Watson (knee); Chargers LB Randall Godfrey (hamstring) and wide receiver Eric Parker (neck); Seahawks WR Darrell Jackson (turf toe); Panthers QB Jake Delhomme (thumb); and Jaguars RB Fred Taylor (hamstring).Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press.
