San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - As a third generation major leaguer, David Bell has a chance to accomplish something his father or grandfather couldn't -- win a World Series.
Bell moved a step closer in that direction Wednesday night with the game- winning RBI single in the eighth inning in San Francisco's 4-3 triumph over the Anaheim Angels in Game 4 of the Fall Classic. The best-of-seven series is tied with Game 5 slated for Thursday at Pac Bell Park.
David's grandfather, Gus Bell, played 15 years in the major leagues, from 1950-64 and was in the 1961 World Series with the Cincinnati Reds, but they lost to the Yankees.
David's father, Buddy Bell, played from 1972-89 and was a five-time All-Star, but never got to the World Series.
Now David Bell has the opportunity to shine in his first Fall Classic and he's done a pretty good job so far. He has a .304 average during the postseason, second only to future Hall of Famer Barry Bonds. Bell is 4-for-13 so far in the World Series and has a homer and three RBI.
After Game 4, Bell was asked what it means to be in the World Series with his family's background.
"I think that just it's tough to get to the World Series," said Bell. "We're able to play well enough to get here. I think it's important. I know it's important. So, it's great having them here. I'm glad they got to see a win tonight."
There were about eight members of Bell's family at the game Wednesday night, but he admitted he never teased his father about never playing in the World Series.
"We talk about everything, but it's not something we really talk about," said Bell. "I mean, he was a great player. It's just no reflection on anything he did. It just shows how important being on a good team is, and a team with a legitimate chance to win. But that's about the only thing we don't talk about."
David's brothers, Mike and Rick, are in the minor leagues so we could be looking at yet more ringing success from the Bell family.
