Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The Minnesota Wild will try for their second straight win when they open a three-game road trip in Chicago against the Blackhawks at the United Center on Thursday.
After dropping their first game of the season on Saturday to the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings, the Wild responded with a 4-3 overtime triumph over the Calgary Flames Tuesday.
Cliff Ronning scored a power-play goal 1:58 into overtime, lifting the Wild to the win. Ronning also had an assist for the Wild, who have won four of their first six games this season (4-1-1).
Antti Laaksonen and Marian Gaborik each had a goal and an assist, while Bill Muckalt lit the lamp for Minnesota, which picked up its first overtime win since March 4, 2001. Manny Fernandez made 18 saves between the pipes.
With Flames forward Martin Gelinas serving a questionable hooking penalty, Gaborik wound up and slapped a shot from the right circle. The puck was deflected out to Ronning, who beat Calgary netminder Roman Turek from the left side of the crease.
Ronning assisted on Gaborik's tally to give him 800 points in his 16-year career. The game-winner gave him 801.
There was some bad news though, as Muckalt dislocated his right shoulder in the first period and will be lost for 2-3 weeks. Despite the injury, Muckalt tied a franchise record with a four-game scoring streak (5g, 2a).
Muckalt, who has had three shoulder surgeries in his career, suffered a dislocated right shoulder in October 2000 while with the New York Islanders.
The Blackhawks enter Thursday's tilt on the heels of a 5-2 setback to the Flames on Saturday, as Chicago continued its four-game homestand.
Steve Thomas and Steve Sullivan notched the two Blackhawk goals, while Jocelyn Thibault, who had allowed a league-low three goals in three games this season, stopped just 20 shots in the loss. Chicago had a two-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
Thomas is now two goals shy of 400 for his career.
Veteran defenseman Phil Housley picked up his third assist in his last three games and is now two helpers away from Al MacInnis and Bernie Nicholls for 33rd place on the all-time list (1,209).
Chicago has won three straight from the Wild after losing the last four meetings.
