=== Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Team Report - June 3rd ===
(My Sportsbook) - Anaheim displayed its overtime brilliance once again on Monday night, scoring 39 seconds into the extra frame off of the stick of Steve Thomas, as the Mighty Ducks evened the series at two games apiece with a 1-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals at the Pond.
The Ducks improved to 7-0 in overtime in these playoffs and moved to 8-1 on home ice. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 26 shots and extended his overtime scoreless streak to 168 minutes and 27 seconds on the way to his fifth shutout of the playoffs. In Game 4 on Saturday, Giguere surpassed Patrick Roy for the NHL postseason record for consecutive scoreless overtime minutes in the 3-2 win.
The 39-year-old Thomas registered his third goal of the playoffs, and his first point in the last eight games, off of assists from Sandis Ozolinsh and Samuel Pahlsson. Ozolinsh has recorded three points (1g, 2a) in the two victories.
The Ducks improved to 12-1 in one-goal games this postseason and 10-0 when scoring the first goal in the game. Last night's win tied the mark for one- goal playoff victories in a single year set by the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. The seven straight OT wins in one postseason are also second to the Habs, who won 10 in a row in '93.
Giguere improved to 14-4 in his debut postseason. He is first among goaltenders in goals-against average (1.32) and save percentage (.956). His 14 victories is tied for the lead with New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, while he trails the Devil netminder by one in shutouts.
Anaheim, in its third postseason appearance, is in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in the franchise's 10 years of existence. The Ducks became the first team in NHL history to knock off the top two conference seeds in the first two rounds of the playoffs by disposing of the Dallas Stars in six games in the conference semis, after sweeping the defending Cup champion Detroit Red Wings in the opening round. They then capped off their run to the Finals with a four-game sweep of the Minnesota Wild, in which they allowed just one score in the series, in the Western Conference finals.
Anaheim was 0-for-1 on the power play last night and has failed on all eight opportunities thus far in the Finals. The Ducks have scored on the man- advantage just six times in 60 chances (10 percent) in the playoffs. However, the penalty killing unit has allowed just seven on 61 tries (88.5 kill percentage) overall.
Adam Oates is the club leader with 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Mike Leclerc is second at 10 points with a team-high eight helpers. Paul Kariya is the top goal scorer with five, but has failed to register a point in five straight contests, his longest drought of the entire year.
The Ducks won both matchups on home ice to even the best-of-seven series after dropping the first two by 3-0 scores in the Meadowlands. Only three teams in NHL history have come back from a 2-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup, with the most recent occurring in 1971, when Montreal rallied to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks.
Head coach Mike Babcock is the first rookie coach to reach the Stanley Cup Finals since Florida's Doug MacLean accomplished the feat with the Panthers in 1996.
Game 5 is slated for Thursday night back at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
