Delmon Young chosen first in MLB Draft

New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays made high school outfielder Delmon Young the top overall pick in the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected Southern University second baseman Rickie Weeks with the second selection. The Detroit Tigers took Wake Forest pitcher Kyle Sleeth with the third overall pick. The San Diego Padres took University of Richmond pitcher Tim Stauffer at No. 4, while the Kansas City Royals selected high school outfielder Chris Lubanski with the fifth pick.

Young has an older brother playing in the majors, as Dmitri Young is an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers. At just 17, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound outfielder from Camarillo High School in California is so spectacular that many scouts believe he may jump to the majors as a teenager.

"We are extremely pleased to select a young player not only with outstanding ability, but also possessing a fine awareness and instinctive feel for the game," said Devil Rays Director of Player Personnel and Scouting Cam Bonifay. "His talent is unquestionable. He is most likely one of the finest young power hitters that has been available in the draft in quite some time."

Young's high school numbers were off the charts. In just 61 at-bats this year, he hit .541 with seven homers and 28 RBI. According to his high school coach, Scott Cline, teams were so afraid of Young's power that he was intentionally walked 26 times. It's amazing Young played so well in 2003, considering he missed the start of the season from an ankle injury he sustained while playing basketball. He also had tendinitis in his arm, but that apparently didn't slow him down much.

"You're talking about a guy who is better than all of the college players playing the game," said Cline. "This kid is 17 years old. You're talking about an Andruw Jones type, who could be up (to the majors) by 18 or 19."

In a workout May 25 at Miller Park, Young drew rave reviews during an extended batting session. It was that day that Young hit a ball estimated at 500 feet over the scoreboard in center field.

Delmon Young was named Baseball America's High School Player of the Year in 2002, when he compiled a .542 average, 17 home runs, 55 runs scored and 56 RBI. He was named the California State Player of the Year, the first junior to win the award since current Oakland Athletic Eric Chavez won it 1995.

Dmitri Young was actually an expansion draft pick of the Devil Rays, but never played in the organization. Dmitri was the fourth player selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1991 draft.

The 20-year-old Weeks hit 16 homers and drove in 67 runs this season at Southern to go along with a .493 average. He set an NCAA Division I career record with a .473 average and became only the second player in NCAA history to win two batting titles.

"We are very pleased to get a player of Rickie Weeks' ability," said Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik. "He is a pure hitter with tremendous speed and power, tools that will help him on his trip through our minor league system and to the major leagues."

Sleeth, a righthander, ended his junior season at Wake Forest with a 7-3 record and 2.81 ERA. He matched a NCAA Division I record with a 26-game winning streak from March 2001 through March of 2003.

"We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to select a pitcher the caliber of Kyle Sleeth today," Tigers Director of Scouting Greg Smith said. "Sleeth is a big righthander with quality stuff and a proven winner."

It marked the eighth time in 10 years and 10th time in 13 years, Detroit has selected a pitcher in the first round.

Stauffer was a two-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year. A finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country by USA Baseball, Stauffer posted a 9-5 record with 146 strikeouts this year, an Atlantic 10 single-season record. He also led the A-10 in EA (1.97).

Lubanski is basking in the spotlight of being recently named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. The honor is prestigious, especially for a young man who played at a Catholic League school that has just 500 students.

An outstanding hitter with tremendous speed, the left-handed hitting Lubanski compiled an amazing .528 average with a slugging percentage of 1.097 in just 23 games at Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic High School in Norristown, PA, just outside Philadelphia.

The Chicago Cubs selected high school outfielder Ryan Harvey with the sixth pick, while the Baltimore Orioles took college pitcher Nick Markakis at No. 7. Mississippi State pitcher Paul Maholm was selected eighth, while the Texas Rangers stayed in state by taking high school pitcher John Danks. The Colorado Rockies made high school third baseman Ian Stewart the 10th pick in the draft.
