Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - The Montreal Expos go for their seventh straight win tonight and a three-game sweep of the AL West-leading
Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The Expos' last seven-game winning streak came September 13-20 last year.
Last night, Michael Barrett broke a seventh inning tie with a sacrifice fly and Livan Hernandez tossed seven strong innings, as the Expos won 3-1.
Mike Cameron ended 2-for-4 with a home run for the Mariners, who lost for just the third time in 14 games. The Mariners, who have dropped four in a row at home, lost back-to-back games overall for the first time since May 24-25. Seattle's only three-game slide this season came April 9-11. The Mariners are trying to avoid being swept in a series for the first time since dropping a four-game set on the road against the Rangers September 9-12 last season.
Montreal is 7-8 thus far on a 22-game, six-city trip away from Olympic Stadium and won't return to the Big O until June 20 to play the Toronto Blue Jays. The Expos are within five games of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Claudio Vargas will toe the rubber tonight for the Expos. The righthander, who will be facing the Mariners for the first time in his career, has allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts this year, but has worked more than six innings only twice.
Vargas has surrendered just one earned run over his last two starts, a span of 10 innings. In his most recent outing, Saturday against Texas, Vargas allowed seven hits and four runs -- none earned -- over five innings.
Ryan Franklin will get the ball tonight for Seattle. The righty is 1-2 over his last five appearances, but has allowed three runs or less in each of those outings. Franklin has been pounded for six homers over his last four trips to the mound. Franklin is 1-3 over his six home starts this year.
The Expos' bullpen has not given up a run in the last four games, a span of 11 1/3 innings.
Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez has 1,147 RBI and is six shy of passing Ken Griffey Jr. for the all-time mark in Mariners history.
The Expos are 14-5 in one-run games this season.
