Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Veteran third baseman Matt Williams has officially announced his retirement on Thursday after a 17-year major league career, according to a published report. The Arizona Republic reported that Williams has decided to turn down other offers in order to spend more time with his children. Both the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies came calling following his release, but he decided to dedicate more time to his family. "Baseball certainly is a big part of my life and has given me a lot. I think I gave back a lot with a lot of desire," he explained. "But my kids are ages 13, 12 and 10, and I've been a baseball player and missed a lot of their time. It's more important to be present with them." Williams was waived by the Arizona Diamondbacks when the team acquired third baseman Shea Hillenbrand from the Boston Red Sox. The Diamondbacks are still responsible for the oft-injured Williams' $10 million salary. The 37-year old Williams batted .246 with Arizona this season with four home runs and 16 RBI. The five-time All-Star finished his career with a .268 batting average, 378 home runs and 1,218 RBI with the Diamondbacks, Giants and Indians. The four-time Gold Glove winner was the last player remaining with Arizona from the Diamondbacks' 1998 Opening Day roster.
