Boston, MA (My Sportsbook) - New England Patriots running back Corey Dillon will ask the team for his release of the final three years of his contract and retire, the Boston Globe reported on Thursday. The 32-year-old Dillon would hang up his spikes at 14th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 11,241 yards in his ten seasons. Dillon owns the Patriots franchise-record for rushing yards in a season, with a career-high 1,635 in 2004. Dillon established himself as one of the premier backs in the league during his seven years in Cincinnati, topping 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons, and breaking the league's single-game rushing record when he ripped the Denver Broncos for 287 yards on only 22 carries on Oct. 22, 2000. His record stood until Baltimore's Jamal Lewis ran for 295 yards in 2003. In search of an elusive Super Bowl ring, Dillon signed with the Patriots before the 2004 season, and his performance that season was instrumental in leading the Pats to their third title in four years, with a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Dillon's productivity declined in 2005, when he ran for only 733 yards on 209 carries, and last season, when he ran for 812 yards while splitting time with rookie Laurence Maroney.
