Kansas City Royals Team Report - June 16 ===
(My Sportsbook) - The Royals went back over the .500 mark on Sunday as they defeated the San Francisco Giants, 5-4. Mike Sweeney's two-run, game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Kansas City to the win and in the process improved itself to 33-32 on the year.
Angel Berroa went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored for the Royals, who took two of three in the first-ever interleague series between the teams and have won five of eight overall.
Kansas City trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, but Berroa led off the inning with a bloop double to right off San Francisco closer Tim Worrell. Berroa moved to third on Brent Abernathy's sacrifice bunt, but Worrell struck out Desi Relaford and had an 0-2 count on Aaron Guiel. However, Guiel watched four straight pitches sail out of the strike zone and drew a walk to get Sweeney to the plate.
Sweeney then found himself staring at an 0-2 count, but ripped Worrell's next pitch into the right-center field gap. Berroa walked home from third with the tying run while the speedy Guiel raced all the way home from first with the game-winner. Sweeney, who started celebrating in the basepath between first and second, never reached second so he was credited with only a single.
The Royals won a game in their final at-bat for the 11th time this season.
Mike MacDougal (2-3) earned the win in relief for the Royals, giving up one hit and striking out one in a scoreless top of the ninth.
Kansas City will pin its hopes on 31-year-old lefthander Darrell May, who is 0-3 on the year with a 4.14 ERA. In his last start, the San Bernardino, CA native allowed four runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
In four career appearances against Minnesota, May is 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA.
