(My Sportsbook) - The
Detroit Tigers had a chance to do something on Sunday they haven't done all season, win a home series. However, a five-run fifth inning by one of the major league's worst road teams was all the
Colorado Rockies needed to edge the Tigers 5-4, continuing Detroit's dismal year at Comerica Park. It marked the Rockies' first road series victory of the year.
"This one is disappointing. They are happy over there and we are still looking to break our streak," Tigers manger Alan Trammell said about the Tigers' home losing streak which dates back to August 9-11 of last season when they captured two of three games from the Baltimore Orioles.
Detroit, which owns the majors' worst home record at 6-26, is 0-11 in home series this year. The Tigers are 0-15-2 in their last 17 home series.
Trammell's team appeared to be headed towards ending the streak after a sacrifice fly by Eric Munson gave Detroit a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. However, the Rockies shelled Gary Knotts in the fifth inning to overcome the deficit. Brent Butler singled with one out and scored on Jay Payton's homer. Colorado then went on to load the bases before Mark Sweeney doubled home all three to make it 5-2.
Despite trailing by three runs the Tigers fought back and pulled within two behind a Dmitri Young solo homer in the sixth. It became 5-4 in the seventh on a single by Warren Morris, which scored Ramon Santiago, who led off the inning with his first career pinch-hit and stole second.
The Tigers threatened in the eighth against Brian Fuentes, who allowed a one- out double to Craig Monroe, but then got Munson to foul out and fanned Ernie Young to end the threat.
Detroit also tried to rally in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with two outs, but Jose Jimenez got Alex Sanchez on a grounder to end the game.
"We competed right until the end -- we had two runners on in the ninth -- but we just couldn't get the last big hit." Trammell said about his team which is 0-37 when trailing after the sixth inning.
The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10 series overall and are just 17-49 on the season, tying for the worst record they had after 66 games set in 1996.
