New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
Los Angeles Kings try to snap a three-game winless streak tonight when they visit the
New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in the second installment of a five-game road trip.
Los Angeles is 0-1-2 since beginning the campaign with three consecutive victories, and began its trek with a 3-3 tie in Detroit on Wednesday night. Jason Allison scored off a deflection midway through the third period to salvage the deadlock for the Kings, who also received goals from Lubomir Visnovsky and Mathieu Schneider. Felix Potvin made 25 saves.
Allison knotted the score 9:35 into the final frame, when his shot from the blueline deflected off defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom's stick and past goaltender Curtis Joseph. Allison leads the Kings with four goals and seven points on the young season.
Potvin has played well between the pipes thus far, posting a 2.14 goals- against average and .917 save-percentage in five starts, but head coach Andy Murray may turn to backup Jamie Storr against New York. Storr stopped 34 shots in a 4-0 victory over the Rangers on Jan. 9, and Murray said Thursday that he could start this evening.
Los Angeles resumes its current venture Sunday in Columbus before closing out with matches in Atlanta and Chicago.
The Rangers, meanwhile, conclude a four-game homestand tonight with the hope of halting a four-match winless skid (0-2-2). Bryan Trottier's crew is coming off Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Washington, its second straight defeat.
Matthew Barnaby scored at 17:31 of the second period to draw the Blueshirts within a goal, but that was all New York could manage against goaltender Olaf Kolzig, who made 31 saves. Ranger killer Jaromir Jagr once again burned New York with a goal and an assist.
The defeat dropped the Rangers to 1-4-2 in their last seven games. That includes a 1-3-1 clip at MSG, where they've tallied just 11 times.
New York continues to be hampered by the sub-par performances put forth by Darius Kasparaitis and Bobby Holik, the team's prime free agent signings this past summer. The two have accounted for a goal and two assists between them, and are a combined minus-10.
The Rangers visit Toronto on Saturday and will play three of their next four games after tonight away from the Garden.
New York and LA split two games last season, with each club winning in the other's building. The Blueshirts are 4-2-1 in the last seven clashes overall, and the Kings are 1-9-1 in their last 11 trips to NYC.
