New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Roger Clemens, who won the 300th game of his career on Friday night at Yankee Stadium against St. Louis, has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period of June 9-15. The six- time Cy Young Award winner also notched his 4,000th career strikeout, becoming only the third hurler to reach the mark.
Clemens, a starter in the Bronx since 1999, became the 21st pitcher in Major League Baseball history to reach the 300-win plateau. The big righthander threw 6 2/3 innings in a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks. He also struck out 10 to record the 104th double- digit strikeout game of his career.
After striking out the side in the first inning, Clemens set down Edgar Renteria on strikes to start the second to notch number 4,000.
Now in his 20th season in the majors, Clemens played 13 seasons for the Red Sox and two for the Blue Jays before signing with New York.
The 6'4, 220-pounder, now 300-155, trails only Christy Mathewson (373-188) for the best record for right-handed pitchers whose careers began after 1900.
The only other pitchers to reach the 4,000-mark in strikeouts are Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136). Ryan was a fellow righty, while Carlton a southpaw.
Clemens joined Phil Niekro as the only pitchers to notch their 300th career win while with the Yankees. Niekro did it in his fifth try on the final day of the 1985 regular season in Toronto.
He became the first hurler to reach the 300-win plateau since Ryan accomplished the feat during the 1990 season.
Tom Seaver, a former teammate of Clemens, is the only other pitcher to win his 300th game at Yankee Stadium. He did it as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1985.
