Detroit, MI (My Sportsbook) - The Pittsburgh Penguins try to stretch their unbeaten streak to six games tonight when they visit the reigning-champion Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.
Mario Lemieux and Co. haven't tasted defeat since an embarrassing 6-0 loss to Toronto on opening night. Since then the Pens are 3-0-2, including back-to- back ties with Tampa Bay and Montreal.
Against the Canadiens on Tuesday, Pittsburgh skated to a 3-3 deadlock at the Bell Centre. Aleksey Morozov continued his torrid start by scoring the equalizer with 9.8 seconds left in regulation, as the Penguins came back from a two-goal third-period deficit. Alexei Kovalev added two goals, and Lemieux assisted on all three tallies.
Lemieux leads the league with 10 assists and 14 points, while Morozov is tied for second in the NHL with six goals. Lemieux, Morozov and Kovalev have all contributed at least a point in each of the last five games, combining for 14 goals and 20 assists as a line.
Pittsburgh heads home after concluding its brief road trip tonight, and will welcome Buffalo to the Igloo on Saturday.
Detroit, meanwhile, caps off a three-game homestand tonight and hopes to extend its own undefeated run to four games. The Wings are 2-0-1 in the last three games, including Wednesday's 3-3 tie against the Kings.
Dave Lewis' troops twice battled back to tie the game after LA had taken a one-goal lead, and grabbed a lead of their own courtesy of Sergei Fedorov 6:26 into the third. But the Kings' Jason Allison knotted things for good midway through the final frame when his point shot deflected off Nicklas Lidstrom's stick and past Curtis Joseph.
Tomas Holmstrom and Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, and Cujo finished with 28 saves.
Detroit is expected to be without rookie Henrik Zetterberg for tonight's game, after he suffered a groin pull against Los Angeles. The Swede is tied for first among NHL freshmen with five points (2g, 3a).
The Red Wings visit Nashville on Saturday, but will return home for a matchup with San Jose next Tuesday.
Detroit toppled Pittsburgh, 4-2, at the Igloo last March 2, but the Penguins are 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings overall between the clubs.
