Ravens new running back can talk the talk

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -Willis McGahee hasn't lost his swagger, an attribute that should allow the newly acquired running back to fit into a Baltimore Ravens locker room known for its brash talk.

The Ravens invested a third-round draft pick and a seventh-round pick in this year's draft along with a third-round pick in next years draft in exchange for the former Buffalo Bills runner, signing the former first-round draft pick to a multiyear contract with a maximum value of $40.12 million.

McGahee, 25, acknowledged Friday that he has something to prove after rushing for a career-low 990 yards and six touchdowns last season. But he wouldn't back off his statement from a few years ago that he believes he's the best back in the league.

``That's how I think,'' McGahee said as the Ravens introduced him in during at their training complex. ``I'm not going to sit here and say I'm second to last in the NFL. If I think I'm the best, and that's my mentality, that's how I'm going to approach things. That's just my opinion.''

McGahee averaged 1,132 yards, 3.9 yards per carry and eight touchdowns per season, sitting out his rookie season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in the Fiesta Bowl. His top season was in 2005 when he was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,247 yards and five touchdowns.

McGahee said that his lack of production last season wasn't his fault.

``My situation wasn't that great,'' said McGahee, adding that his knee is no longer an issue. ``Thank God for getting the 990, to tell you the truth. ... If you get to a better team with receivers, a quarterback, a line helping out, it's going to be hard to stop everybody.''

The former University of Miami star fell out of favor in Buffalo. He was hit with three paternity suits in two years and he suggested in an interview with Penthouse magazine that the Bills should move to Toronto, saying later that those remarks were taken out of context.

McGahee also was criticized by the Buffalo coaching staff, who claimed he didn't know the playbook. McGahee said he will work out in Baltimore instead of in Miami, another point of contention with the Bills.

``Hopefully, I am the piece to the puzzle to this team to get to that next level,'' McGahee said.
