Toronto, Ontario (My Sportsbook) - The
Toronto Raptors have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon press conference to announce a major signing within the club.
Toronto is expected to officially announce the hiring of Kevin O'Neill as the team's new coach. Lenny Wilkens and the Raptors parted ways almost two months ago.
O'Neill, who had been an assistant for the Detroit Pistons, has never been an NBA head coach. He spent the past two seasons as an assistant under former Detroit coach Rick Carlisle.
Prior to his stint with the Pistons, O'Neill was an assistant with the New York Knicks and an NCAA head coach at Northwestern, Tennessee and Marquette.
The 46-year-old O'Neill, who had a career 190-197 record as a head coach at the collegiate level, will be reportedly offered a three-year contract with a starting salary of about $1.8 million.
O'Neill will be faced with the challenge of turning around a Toronto squad that finished this season with a dismal 24-58 record, missing the playoffs for the first time during Wilkens' three-year tenure with the team.
Toronto's best season under Wilkens came in 2001-02 when it finished 47-35 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, only to fall to Philadelphia in seven games.
The Pistons, under the guidance of Carlisle and O'Neill, advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference finals this season, before being swept by New Jersey in four games.
Carlisle was fired and former Philadelphia 76ers coach Larry Brown filled the void.
