Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Ken Harvey singled home two runs and doubled in another during a club-record 12-run sixth inning, as the
Kansas City Royals rolled to a 14-7 victory over the
Minnesota Twins at Kauffman Stadium.
Harvey finished 4-for-5 with five runs batted in for the Royals, who have won the first two of this four-game series to pull within two games of first-place Minnesota in the AL Central. Raul Ibanez added three hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in for Kansas City, while Mike Sweeney chipped in two hits, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.
Tom Prince, Justin Morneau and Dustan Mohr homered for the Twins, who have surrendered 44 runs in losing their last four games.
The Royals trailed 3-1 heading to the home sixth, but sent 16 men to the plate and scored 12 times to blow it open.
Aaron Guiel, after falling behind in the count 0-2, led off with a walk from Minnesota starter Kenny Rogers and Joe Randa singled before a walk to Sweeney loaded the bases. An infield single by Carlos Beltran knocked in a run and Ibanez followed with a base hit to score Randa with the tying run. Harvey then singled home two more for a 5-3 lead, also chasing Rogers.
A bunt by Angel Berroa advanced the runners and Brent Mayne singled off J.C. Romero to score Ibanez. Carlos Febles then dropped down a suicide squeeze to score Harvey for a 7-3 advantage.
Romero then had a curveball slip out of his hands, hitting Guiel in the back to again load the bases. Home plate umpire Larry Poncino immediately ejected Romero, who charged toward the plate and had to be restrained. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was also tossed for arguing the ejection.
Micheal Nakamura was next on the mound for Minnesota and he hit Randa with a pitch to force in a run. Sweeney followed with a two-run double off Torii Hunter's glove at the wall in center. Hunter also committed an error on the play, allowing Randa to score for an 11-3 cushion. After Beltran struck out, Ibanez singled in a run and Harvey doubled in another to cap the uprising.
The 12 runs topped the previous club record of 11, set three times in the club's 35-year history.
A two-run homer by Prince in the sixth pulled the Twins within 13-5 and Morneau connected for his first major league homer in the eighth to make it a seven-run game.
Harvey doubled in Ibanez for the final Kansas City run in the eighth and Mohr belted his eighth homer in the ninth for the final margin.
Kris Wilson (3-0) picked up the win in one inning of relief, despite allowing two runs and three hits.
Rogers (5-3) took the loss. He was charged with seven runs on six hits and four walks in five-plus innings.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the second when Beltran led off with a walk and scored on a double by Harvey.
The Twins tied it in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Corey Koskie, then took the lead in the sixth when Luis Rivas tripled in a run and scored on a single by Denny Hocking.
